This map provides structured access to an up to date, high level, robust body of evidence on the broad topic of alcohol misuse. The map includes evidence on universal, selective and indicated interventions and is intended for a range of audiences:
Universal interventions are prevention interventions targeted at the general public, whole populations or specific settings. It includes evidence on, for example, price, availability and marketing of alcohol and interventions in educational settings. This material may be of interest to those responsible for policy, managers and practitioners working in the NHS, local authorities or criminal justice and those working in education, voluntary or community settings.
Selective interventions target groups or individuals in the population who are at increased risk of alcohol problems. This material may be of interest to those working with individuals whose alcohol consumption has been assessed as hazardous or harmful or who are exposed to a social or health condition that increases risk (for example mental illness, homelessness), or to those commissioning services for these groups.
Indicated interventions are targeted at those with existing alcohol misuse problems. This material may be of interest to practitioners working with this group or those who commission services for them.
Sources included in this map are limited to evidence based guidelines (produced or accredited by NICE) and systematic reviews produced using a robust methodology adhering to systematic review principles. This means that all the included sources have used a comprehensive and stated research strategy, selected sources based on objective criteria and have assessed the risk of bias in the included primary studies (see the 'about' page for details of our methods and the list of resources searched for the maps).
